‘Garbage In, Garbage Out’ Project Risk Management

How many projects fail and had to be rescued by cleverly engineered ‘garbage excuses’?

In my years as a project manager and an insurance manager, more than 90% of projects fail to be completed as expected especially when considering the originally agreed period and to the specified quality of performance.

clip_image001Project managers often manage to get away from blame by ‘thick technical report’ which shift any blame to act of god incidence, unpredictable weather condition, bureaucratic approving authorities, unforeseen escalation of prices, unexpected soil condition and whatever else excuses which sound rational to the higher management.

There is no doubt that failure is inherent to a project and failure is the name of the game.  However, we have to define what do we mean by failure and to understand failure from other team members involve in the project. What is common is my experience are things which are not given serious attention during the initial project approval process.

Act 11: What Do You Want Years Ago?

Think Happiness @Work.  Think about what you are thinking ten years ago.

imageSee where you were, what you were doing, what you were feeling in as clearly as you can.  What were troubling you?  Is there something which you desperately want?

Create a mental picture of your inner life then. Try to remember. Take out any old journals or diaries that you may have. Talk to those close to you to refresh old memories.

Is there any of your life problems which somehow  seem to have solved by themselves?  Chances are many of the life challenges that have kept you wide awake at many nights, have simply disappeared as the months goes by.

Is there anything which you desperately want and now  with you? Are you happy and continue to be happy with what you have? Changes are you now have a mix feeling of satisfaction and regret.

Write down lessons which have learn in your paper or online journal. You will need to revisit this lesson learn exercise time and again.

Act 10: Know How to Use Words for Good

Think Happiness @Work

Affirmation is a declaration that something is true. Think about any words that you have repeated been saying to yourself but does not seem to change anything.

imageStart by asking the yourself if you honestly believe in anything you are saying?  Try changing to words which can bring your closer to reality and the realm of possibility.

If you are deep in debt, saying words that you are rich and wealthy will probably be an act of foolishness. Instead, try saying that your loan and borrowing are reducing by the month. Then take small actions that goes along with your new af?rmation.

For a start, forget designer’s dresses, settle credit card balance in full each month, DIY your lunch, ask yourself whether you really need the BMW and Mercedes …

As each small affirmation comes to action and result, you will slowly but surely strengthen your inner belief that will make the game of life to work for you.

Do this often and do it each day. Sooner or later,  you will surprise yourself when you find yourself in a position of confidence, in control and in charge of your own destiny.

This time words will work for your own good.
